FURTHER AFIELD

46 By the Creek is positioned on the England Coast Path leading to Saxon Shore Way․ For a short walk, cross the fields to Hollowshore, on the Swale estuary, and enjoy a pint or two at The Shipwright’s Arms.

For the more energetic, cross the creek and follow the Saxon Shore, stopping off at Quint’s Retreat for coffee en-route to Whitstable, famous for its oysters․ Sit on Whitstable beach and watch the glorious sunset while savouring fish and chips or have a well-earned drink at The Old Neptune; a welcoming pub on the Beach. Don’t worry, you don’t have to walk back – trains to Faversham run until late.

Trains run from Faversham all along the Kent coast, which offers a variety of experiences to suit all tastes.

Whitstable - grab some Oysters at Wheeler's Oyster Bar or one of the harbour shacks. Or maybe some cockles. Stroll around the Harbour Market cabin shops for an original gift, wander along the high street, visit the castle, walk along the seafront to Tankerton slopes, past the colourful beach huts and watch windsurfers and sailboarders tackling the elements.

Further along lies Herne Bay with its broad promenade and pier, and Reculver Towers and Roman Fort, an English Heritage site. Follow the coast round to Minnis Bay, with its long sandy beach and paddling pool perfect for children to search for crabs and shrimps.

Margate with its eclectic mix of Dreamland Pleasure Park, ‘kiss me quick’ seafront, wide sandy beach and trendy cultural quarter follows on. Beyond lies our personal choice, Broadstairs, a delightful old-fashioned seaside popular with families and favourite of Charles Dickens, perfect for a day chilling in the sun. And when the sun goes down, Broadstairs boasts some great eateries. The coast leads on to Ramsgate with its bustling harbour, and continues to Sandwich, Deal, Dover and Folkestone. All accessible by train from Faversham. Prefer the freedom of the car? All of these coastal resorts are within an easy drive.

Inland, a short drive (or train) will take you to Canterbury with its stunning cathedral; admire Chilham’s historic architecture, location of many films, take a picnic to Mount Ephraim Gardens or explore the Downs.

Head south to Chatham and the Historic Dockyard. Or Leeds Castle, steeped in history, and explore house and gardens.

A few minutes drive (or longer walk) from '46' is Oare Gunpowder Works Country Park. Nature lovers will want to visit Oare Marshes, or Sheppey with its nature reserves and RSPB viewing point within a scenic drive.

Whether you’re looking for coast, historic buildings, exploring nature or just somewhere to chill, 46 By the Creek offers the perfect base for you.
